Stage 10 - Congo to Mystery Bay

Sorry to say but one of our bushbabes, Geri injured herself and was unable to come on our walk. We all missed you Geri and hope that you are fighting fit for the next walk. So the four of us met up early at Tuross Heads at our luxury beachhouse cabin, our accommodation for the next 4 days. The term “luxury” is used loosely.
We drove to Congo for the start of our walk on the Bingie Dreaming Track in the Euroballa National Park. The track is well marked and 13.5kms long. It's an amazing track running along the coast without us having to actually walk on the beach and packed with wildlife. We encountered a huge grey kangaroo with an injured paw. A fellow walker warned us to be on the look out for an echidna (or anteater) and we were lucky to come upon a large echidna with large yellow needles on it’s back...so cute...when you come close, it folds into itself and doesn’t move (hoping you won’t see it).
I was walking merrily along and just looked out to sea and thought I saw a windsurfer but realised it was a whale when I saw its big fin come up out of the water. We watched the whale play along the coast for some time. What a marvellous site!!
My favourite, without a doubt, was the Buddha wallaby. Yes, a Buddha wallaby!!!. At first I thought it was a statue and then I thought "why would they put a statue in the middle of the bush?" The wallaby stood stock still in a mediating pose with its paws up for a few minutes. Incredible! And then I blinked and it was gone. But we have great photos. We did walk a little way on the beach and this time, instead of dead birds,YUK, we had blue bottles everywhere.

We saw amazing black cockatoos with beautiful black and red tails and lots of other birds and a tiny lizard. This was by far our best walk for seeing wildlife and, of course, the whales.
We ended up at a lake just before Tuross Heads and had to take our shoes off and wade across getting all our clothes wet. We made it over the bar and reached Tuross Heads. We then walked another 1.5 kms or so to our beachhouse where we relaxed in our compulsory spa.
The walk took 4 hours and was one of the easiest by far and we had the landmark of Montague Island which was 6 miles offshore.

We drove south to Kianga where we left one car and then back to Potato Point. The walk today is about 13 kms. I was curious to see Potato Point as we could see it in the distance from our Beachhouse but there wasn't much there.
Again we were walking in the Euroballa National Park. We started along a 4 wheel drive track and saw wallabys and lots of birds. We then arrived at the sea and had to walk along a beach for 7 kilometres, oh no!!!!!!! And with the bluebottles. John C takes great delight in popping the blue bottles by stepping on them!!! We had to keep ourselves amused somehow!!
Just before Dalmeny there is conveniently a bridge which takes you across the lake to the town and what a beautiful town it is. Manicured lawns everywhere and a cycle track that goes forever that was sponsored by the government stimulus package. We had lunch looking back from where we had just walked. Along the cycleway was a lookout and this time we saw a herd of seals frolicking in the sea. What a wonderful sight. We also saw a wallaby with a baby joey in her pouch and again a flock of red and yellow tail parrots, a rabbit and a blue wren.
Strange signs along the beachfront...”Dogs are allowed...penalites apply”...what does that mean??? Another one..”Time sharing area for dogs.Dogs allowed on the beach from 5pm until 5am”. Do dogs have watches in Dalmeny??
Back home to the compulsory spa.
Again a bright and sunny day and a wonderful walk. We were all tired but happy. John met a friend, Floriano, who has a place in Tuross Heads and who joined us for dinner.

Scott’s birthday. Happy birthday Scott and a rest day for us.
We drove to Narooma and went on a cruise to Montague Island aboard the Sea Eagle to see the whales and the seals and this we did. Lots of whales and numerous seals lazing and sunning themselves on the rocks. Some were swimming with their fins in the air, this is apparently to cool themselves. I think this is how the sport of synchronized swimming must have evolved. Unfortunately, one of us is not a very good sailor and was seasick (Rose) but still enjoyed watching the whales and seals.
Lunch of prawns, fish and chips on the lake at Narooma and then home for a rest. Well for most of us but our little energiser bunny, John C, went off fishing for several hours and bought home some great salmon.
The Wallabys lost their semi-final to New Zealand in the Rugby World Cup. (dahhhhh)

We drove to Mystery Bay and then back to Narooma where we started our walk.
We walked around the golf course, on the beach and through the cemetery and then a property with a sign”Keep out.Trespassers prosecuted”. Oh well, it wouldn’t be one of our usual walks unless there were problems or we get lost. So back we walked through the industrial area of Narooma and then along the Princess H'way till we came upon a caravan resort that we walked through to get to the beach. What a peaceful beach, Hankerchief Beach. I wish that we had kept a log of all the beaches that we have walked past. There are so many, all different and very beautiful. The day was perfect and the water was glittering in amazing shades and hues of blue with the sun shimmering on it. Heaven for John C as there on the beach was a fellow fisherman with not one but two fishing lines.
And now the fun starts! To get to the Euroballa National Park we had to wade through blue bottle infested waters. The water was crystal clear and refreshing. Everyone was O.K except our little Rosebud who didn’t have quickdry pants and who tantalized the guys, especially John H, by stating that she only had see through white lacy undies on. Needless to say the guys wanted her to strip off but Rose resisted the temptation and plowed on in wet soggy pants.
It was amazing. We were walking over the grassy clifftops of this huge property with a brand new house and it’s own airstrip and 2 beaches. I looked out and there she blew!! Several whales who again frolicked in the sea and followed us or we followed them along the coast for about 2 hours.
Along the beach and then shoes off again to go around a huge rock that was detached from the cliff. The sea was pounding in and we managed to not get our shoes wet, i.e, until we put them on again and a wave came in and then Rose got hers wet. But like a real tropper she soldiered on and she “NO COMPLAIN”, wet clothes and wet shoes regardless!
Almost there but we had to navigate our way up a cliff top. John C took the high road and John H and Di took the low road but where was Rose? Lost in the bush with russelling all around her. Was it a snake or worse? But she was rescued by John C and we finished the walk in one piece and arrived at Mystery Day.
The walk was about 16 kilometres and took us about 5 hours. We are now a third of the way to Melbourne!!!Yeh!!!
A magical day. Perfect blue sky, whales, crystal clear azure seas, wading in the sea, cliff top views of Montague Island and the mountains, what more could you want and this was a MONDAY.
We had a great lunch at the historical town of Central Tilba and rewarded ourselves at the lollie shop. That night we had a dessert and sang happy birthday to John C. We all loved our chocolate coated licorice sticks.... yummy.....
We all wore our tee shirts and people asked us what we were doing and we happily said “we are walking to Melbourne” and they reply”You know there is a bus!”.
