Stage 5 - Cliff Sea Bridge to Bulli

Saturday, 3rd April 2010

We started our walk at around 8:45am from the Cliff Sea Bridge an amazing engineering feat. The bridge is built right on top of the ocean and along some of its banisters people have attached metal locks with engraved messages such as “Robert & Susie’s 50th Anniversary” or the more banal “Jack was here”. I ask myself, how did this begin? ?

We then stopped at the Scarborough Hotel for morning tea. We sipped on large cappuccinos with huge servings of banana cake and raisin toast served with blackberries brulee. This is utterly decadent, but as this is MY BIRTHDAY I get to chose what I want…… Great! I wish everyday I could have the choice of everything. Next on the list I chose for the walk to have very FEW uphills and to be mostly flat ground or downhill. And guess what? It was! Geri and I were delighted….

Due to a ‘wonky’ knee John (Hopalong) had to return to the car, rather than risk further injuring it. He will meet us at the end of the walk and be our chauffeur.

As we are all in our 50’s our bodies aren’t the same as before and some of us have wonky bits, in my case it’s a wonky hip, but we will push along.

The path meandered alongside the south coast and we feasted on spectacular views of the beach and alongside it green hills perfectly framed by sweet scented gumtrees. We are keen to find the perfect house for Geri’s retirement and we were spoiled for choice; some of them were dreamhomes with million-dollar views, but she’d rather have a modest one with a picket fence, good on ya Geri.

Sometimes the path led nowhere and a couple of times we were forced to trespass on some folk’s backyards, which made us feel really guilty; but the residents were friendly and waved us on.

I soaked my feet in the surprising warm water gently lapping on the beach and saw for the first time these black birds flying and squawking noisily above us, they’re called ‘Sooty Oystercatchers’.

Then we finally reached Bulli and headed off for lunch at the Austibeach CafĂ©. John and I had the spaghetti with mussels and prawns, it was absolutely delicious. The others had the fancy hamburgers (prawns; vegetarian and chicken). We were then joined by Maria (Geri’s friend from Wollongong).

And to finish the very enjoyable morning they provided me with a little birthday cake. What a lucky woman I am! I’ve decided turning 55 is not such a bad thing, I shall have more birthdays, especially if they’re to be enjoyed with John and good friends…

Happy Easter
